Hey, I’m Mario…

For the past decade, my true self was buried under corporate masks and strict obligations as I focused on building external success for other people—climbing the B2C ladder at places like Tesla and Vodafone, and ghostwriting for agencies.

Upon experiencing a severe burnout and near-death panic attack at age 30 in October 2023, I became acutely aware of the heavy, hidden cost of pretending to be someone else. I found myself coming to grips with a renewed sense of purpose, a fresh and vibrant drive to drop the fake confidence and find a deeper, unforced meaning in life.

In recognizing this, I knew returning to the old world would destroy me. I needed to honor this wake-up call and embark on the next phase of my journey, free of the need to please everyone else.

I’m using this digital home as the canvas for this “next chapter”—a space I call mont.REALNESS. It seems fitting because this is the exact guidance I desperately needed when my journey began with a blind, directionless leap to Australia at age 20. I suspect this will be my life’s work.

I’ve spent the last ten years transforming my life from absolute rock bottom across my health, finances, and relationships. It feels like a lifetime ago, completely unrecognizable from the anxious young man who used to rely on alcohol and fake confidence just to survive social events.

The game was different back then. Hell, even a few years ago. Now, grounded in a decade of lived experience and deep research, I have a broader, fundamentally different perspective on what it means to actually succeed.

Having played the corporate and marketing games from the inside, I’ve observed a terrifying paradox in our increasingly artificial, machine-enhanced world.

While the internet and an endless arsenal of AI tools have democratized the ability to create content and build formulaic “personal brands,” they have also pushed us to perform harder and wear even thicker masks. Like a quiet thief in the night, this culture of constant performance is fleecing us of what is uniquely human, leaving an entire generation exhausted, anxious, and agonizingly out of touch with who they really are.

Society and the modern digital landscape promised us connection, making the world feel like a place where we could finally belong…

Yet, the hidden machinations behind the corporate ladders, social media feeds, and formulaic “personal brands” are engineered to exploit our deepest insecurities. They feed on our primal need for external validation and status, morphing into a manipulative force that amplifies our agonizing fear of “feeling behind.”

An engine of superficial incentives fuels the pressure to perform, perform, perform—driving the desperate pursuit of arbitrary metrics, fake confidence, and outsourced identities, subtly nudging us interaction-by-interaction away from our unforced, true selves.

Somewhere along the way, our genuine internal compass was superseded by the need to please everyone else. We learned to prioritize the plural over the personal: more approval, more status, a better mask—and as fast as fucking possible.

While we are all unique individuals, a significant issue arises when our own intrinsic goals and values are completely overshadowed by the heavy weight of living for someone else’s expectations.

In this scenario, we become fragmented versions of ourselves on millions of AI-driven, templated newsfeeds. We show different sides of ourselves to different people—puppets in an exhausting corporate and social game where we are both actors and the audience, rather than the sovereign directors of our own reality.

When our self-worth is tethered to manufactured status and gaming external validation as the mechanism for success, we have a serious fucking problem.

We’re living in an increasingly artificial sea of low-quality, template-driven fakeness, which I believe offers an opportunity to create something better. Something that emphasizes the signal over the noise, that is calm, unforced, and profoundly real.

In recognizing this trap, the core realization becomes clear: you cannot cure the anxiety of feeling behind by wearing a better mask; you have to put your own oxygen mask on first, figure out who you are, and earn your own trust.

(Side-Note: In 2013, at age 20, I fled my small hometown of Münster for Australia to escape my own feelings of being bullied and totally lost. I arrived with no skills, no vision, and a heavy reliance on alcohol as a social crutch—desperate to build a “successful” life on top of a fake foundation. It took a severe corporate burnout a decade later to finally burn the bridge to that old world.)

That lived experience is worth internalizing today because it points to an alternative path for men like us who are exhausted from the performance and choose not to play the game of faking-it-until-we-make-it at any cost.

While AI-clones, faux-gurus, and exhausted corporate climbers trip over themselves to perform harder and extract validation to fill an empty cup, we get to play a very different game in how we grow, reclaim our lives, and serve others.

And that “different game”—unforced living—is what I’ll be writing about here.

There are many, many ways to try and build a successful life.

But over a decade of personal turnarounds, burnout, and rebuilding from scratch, I have found that dropping the masks to slowly cultivate your own foundation—through Awareness, Growth, and Contribution—leads to far greater, unforced satisfaction.

This fills your own cup first, so that it naturally overflows to others in a mutually beneficial outcome that endures.

There’s a superpower in focusing on your own holistic realness instead of chasing external validation, on consistent daily micro-actions (Do Something Daily) instead of instant, hyped-up gratification.
