If you don’t know what I’m talking about, here’s what’s going on:
Recently I saw that stuff was going on.
On Facebook, of course.
(Where else are there more people wasting their lives by replying to, commenting on, liking, or sharing every single pettiness? Just kidding … Well, kind of.)
It all comes down to THIS:
Eric Worre vs Gary Vee.
The “world’s most watched and most trusted resource for Network Marketing training and support” (Eric Worre) against “the CEO of VaynerMedia, an agency that helps companies find their social voices and build their digital brands through microcontent and other storytelling actions” (Gary Vee).
What the heck? Let me break it down for you, real quick:
It’s basically a debate on “The Truth about Network Marketing” (or so I like to call it, since that’s the title of the upcoming podcast episode of The Highly Inspiring Journey, Trip #8.)
However, it hasn’t been a real debate yet because it all started with Gary Vee being asked during a Facebook Live Q&A session what his opinion on multi-level marketing was. And, among other things, he said that it’s not a viable business model:
I do not believe that multi-level-marketing is a great business model just based on the data. There’s a small percentage of people that make money, the far majority don’t and this idea any business that is predicated, any entrepreneur that is interested in the following model: I’m gonna get D-rock to do something, then D-rock is gonna get someone else to do something and I’m gonna make more money than they do because I’m at the top of the tree and started the process is a bad business model. This thought of passive income, I’m gonna get enough people to do shit and then I am going to be on the beach, pool-side all day and money is going to be flowing in, it’s just not a good model, it’s not sustainable, there’s a couple people that can pull it off, but, I’m just not a believer.” –Gary Vaynerchuk
Then many “MLMer” got mad (and I get this as a former network marketer myself). However, they now believe they have to not only educate Gary Vaynerchuk on the profession, but all of us “outsiders.”
Now, before someone comes up with any kind of conspiracy theory …
…I’m STILL friends with a lot of people in the direct sales industry, and have nothing against network marketing.
(In fact, it saved my life. But that’s for another day…)
See, I’ve worked in the industry myself for about one year as an independent distributor for an International dietary supplement company—gave it my best shot offline as well as online—and, thus, even though I quitted, may bring a more balanced point of view to the discussion. That’s the plan for next show.
Back to the story.
People on Facebook got REALLY mad.
Me?
I find it extremely amusing.
Why? Because BOTH Eric and Gary are right AND wrong, and make statements that aren’t based on facts (unfortunately).
Fair enough, there is no real right or wrong answer.
But, you can (and should!) always do your research.
That’s where both of them fall short IMHO.
And that’s also the main reason why I decided to dedicate a whole new episode of The Highly Inspiring Journey on this issue.
More on that this Sunday.
