Starting Strong—Why New Year Resolutions Don’t Work, and What to Do Instead!

The question is not: “How well are you doing on day 1?”
It is: “What are you doing on day 2, day 11, day 23, day 74—when the going gets tough?”
Because that’s when it matters.
Therefore the overall question is this: “How are you progressing throughout the ENTIRE year?”
It all depends on whether you keep on going, no matter what, or not.
Remember that, and take action accordingly.

- FOCUS ON THE BIG PICTURE. Forget New Year resolutions. The reason they almost always fail is because people set meaningless goals.
- WRITE DOWN MEANINGFUL GOALS ONLY. Today. If you’ve already done your 2017 resolutions, I’ve got good news for you. You don’t have to throw ’em away. However, you do need to revisit and review them. Get them here and take a closer look: Are you willing to do WHATEVER it takes to make them happen? Some of them? Or any of them, at all? If not, scratch. And rewrite.
- PERCEPTIVE INSIGHTS ON SETTING A MEANINGFUL GOAL: Have a deeper purpose in your life. What do you dedicate your life to? What’s your mission? Then, when you’re clear on that (and it takes time to figure that out), align your goals to your vision.
- HAVE A SYSTEM IN PLACE. Another reason why most New Year resolutions fail is because people don’t have a process, a proven system in place that helps them deliver desired results consistently. Namely, this is a habit (or multiple habits). Remember: Whatever it takes.
- NEXT UP: HOW TO BUILD HABITS AND MAKE ‘EM STICK. More on this in the next episode of The Highly Inspiring Journey. For this week, focus on setting meaningful goals. It’s key. The best habits and routines are absolutely worthless if the goals suck. Reversely, the same. Goals are worthless, unless you take action.
