How to Learn Faster by Avoiding “Speed Reading”

Once upon a time, there was a myth. A BIG myth called “Speed Reading.”
With speed reading you can read 1,000 words per minute. With speed reading you can get through boring books in no time at all. With speed reading you can be the popular person with fascinating stories to tell.
Enough already!
Let’s ask a different question: “So what?”
What’s the point if all you do is speeding up the process?
Do you retain the knowledge? Do you use your time effectively (and not only efficiently)? Do you even enjoy the process? Or is it just about some bragging rights? What about your real-life results?
You tell me.
(I tested various speed reading techniques myself, and … well. To me, it’s not a good use of my precious time—at all. I’ll tell you why in a second.)
In the following, five inspiring insights on “How to Learn Faster by Avoiding Speed Reading.”
—INSPIRING INSIGHTS—
- SPEED READING DOESN’T MAKE NO SENSE. Look, what’s your outcome? What do you really want? Like really. Think about that. Start with the end in mind. Pick up ONE book that’s great, and stick with it (instead of reading ten books that are just about average).
- GET GOOD AT THE STRATEGIES, THE FUNDAMENTALS, THE BIG PICTURE STUFF. Focus on the fundamentals, first and foremost … and practice them consistently—every single day. No excuse. (Check out the episode on “How to Listen Better” for more inspiring insights and advanced tactics!) Before the “how” you gotta understand the strategy, the concept, the “why.” Most people aren’t successful—according to their own standards—because they give in to what’s easy, fun, enjoyable. Nuff said. Let’s move on … on to the next one.
- LEARN FROM THE PROS, AND STUDY THEM LIKE CRAZY. What’s the point of reading, for example, one hundred books per month? Congrats! It’s just a BIG waste of your time, money, effort, and some more. Don’t do that. Focus on mastery. Do that, meaning: Focus. On. Mastery. Got it?
- “AVOID AVOIDANCE”: In case you haven’t already … Stop studying—if that’s all you do. Focus on what’s essential. That means: APPLY WHAT YOU LEARN. Don’t move from one source, to the other, to the other, to the other WITHOUT applying a thing. Follow Mario’s advanced tips presented in this week’s episode.
- BONUS: More on that (and how he uses “speed learning” instead of “speed reading”) in next week’s episode called “‘Speed Learning’: How Mario Reads and Studies Books.” Stay tuned! …)
And, as always:
Enjoy the Journey,
