The Hidden Cost of “Free”

October 18, 2016

What does the fox say…

Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding

Gering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding

Gering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding

Nope, I don’t mean that annoying song.

What he says is this:

Free!

Free!

Free!

At least, when he’s taking a look at the Internet.

Well, I confess … lame joke.

But still true.

Look, it’s great that you can get a lot of cool stuff on the Internet nowadays. Even for free.

However, everything has a price.

A hidden cost, so to speak.

Nothing is, in that sense, “free.”

Let’s take info products (e.g. an online course) as a real life example:

  • Free usually takes you longer, because it’s less comprehensive (or important details are left out) so you still have to figure out a lot on your own—and probably waste additional time spinning your tail.
  • If something is free, we oftentimes dismiss its value and quality. Thus, we don’t immediately implement (and instead, let the information sit on our hard drive forever—without touching it again). What a waste!
  • Additionally, if you want to learn something new it’s not only about the information itself, but THE WAY it is presented. And this is where most of the free stuff really falls short; it’s either jammed with too much (unnecessary) information … or, even worse, taught in such a boring way that even the most avid student would lose her interest in the subject. Yuck…
  • Heck, even freedom in itself isn’t free—it requires responsibility.

That’s why I almost always focus on the VALUE. (If I can afford it AND I see the value in it, I purchase it. Why? Because the BEST investment I can make in my entire life … is NOT in the stock market—it’s in myself.)

Yet, I fully agree that free (or cheap) stuff can be better than paid one.

In this instance, however, one of two things happened.

  1. Either the paid stuff is bad (and, thus, overpriced)…
  2. Or, the free product is so great that the creator should charge for it (but hasn’t because … well, many reasons).
